In general, we will not accommodate Zoom requests--in rare instances will exceptions be made. Our rationale is thus:
In our experience, offering Zoom links quickly leads to people attending via Zoom for convenience rather than out of necessity, translating to diminished in-person attendance. In-person attendance of the colloquium is important both for scientific engagement--which is usually much more productive in person--as well as community building.
Additionally, questions via Zoom tend to be disruptive--we find that it takes several rounds of back-and-forth between the speaker in Kiva and a Zoom attendee to clarify what a question means.
